Stroke Facts: 2 Tips for falling with style
I fell a lot after my strokes. Partly due to the stroke and partly due to the stroke giving me dystonia (a neurological illness that causes involuntary muscle movements).
Despite the fact that falling hurts and we swear we’ll eventually break a hip, there’s no point in getting depressed over it.
Instead, turn it into a sport! It’s not only entertaining for yourself, but it releases the stress of those around you who want to freak and run for it.
Here’s two ways you can make it work:
1. Make score cards from 3 x 5 index cards. Scribble, to the best you can, scores like 1.0, 1.5, etc.
Next time you fall, pull one out and announce your score! I got a lot of laughs with this one.
Eventually people began arguing over my scores and giving tips on how improve my fall and get a higher score!
2. Simply call out your score! Do it with enthusiasm. After all, this is the Fall Olympics!
If you practise this at home, you’ll be a pro by the time you get out in public.
Never surrender! Never give up!
