Let’s Draw Cartoons!

Being a stroke survivor, we get to have a second childhood!  How?  The stroke has taken away a lot of our grown up skills, like: eating without spilling food on ourselves, walking without falling down, not wetting ourselves and holding something so simple as a pen or pencil without hurting ourselves.

So, let’s take advantage of this rare moment in life and do something that’s super cool and fun!  We’re going to work on our cognitive skills!  Improve our manual dexterity! Improve our concentration!  How are we going to do it?  We’re going to start drawing cartoons!

When I was recovering from my last stroke, this was my favourite way of relearning to work my hands and fingers.  I stabbed myself so many times with my pencil I’m surprised I didn’t bleed to death.  Eventually I learned how to control my muscles and drawing was less painful and more fun!

The easiest way I found to draw cartoons was using Ed Emberley’s  “Make a World.”   The age range is 4 - 8 year olds, so it’s perfect for stroke survivors!

As the name suggests - you get to make your own little world.  You learn to draw teepee’s, trains, critters, knights, indians, sailors - all kinds of cool stuff.

Nothing is complicated because he shows you all the shapes you need to draw everything in the book.  You’ll practise circles, squares and other geometric forms.  You’ll also practise various numbers and stuff he calls “things.”

So!   Now you know what to do!  Head over to your local library and pick up “Make a World” or order it online from Amazon.com.  Come to think of it!  You might want to head over to Amazon to get a peek at what the book is like!

You can search through  “Make a World”  and even draw a few of the items on the pages you’re allowed to see!  It’s a great way to start practising creating your own little worlds!

By the way, once you try them out you’ll be hooked and have hours of fun getting lost in all the crazy little worlds you create!

Happy drawing!

Never surrender!  Never give up!
