The 30 Minute Fidget!

Did you know fidgeting helps burn calories?  Yip.  It keeps your body moving.  It’s an easy thing to do for nearly every stroke survivour.

Back to moving.  It’s important to exercise a minimum of 30 minutes/day, but what if all the traditional exercises like: squats, crunches, push ups, running in place, etc are beyond your physical abilities at the moment?  The answer is - fidget!

The 30 minute fidget is best done to music!  Music naturally gets your body moving and makes fidgeting more fun.

If the thought of 30 straight minutes of fidgeting bores you to tears, do 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there, so long as you get in your 30.

Some fidgeting ideas:

1. Twiddle your thumbs!

2.  Bounce your legs up and down.

3.  Flap your arms (elbows in and out)

4.  Tap your fingers on the table.  Try one finger at a time.  Add variety to your taps!

5.  Shake your feet!

6.   Look side to side, up and down, do head circles.

7.  If you can stand without falling flat - walk or jog in place…even if your feet never leave the floor!  Get those arms swinging and lift your feet up as best you can.  If nothing else, it’s great entertainment for those around you.

8.  Do military presses!  Raise your hands to shoulder level and push up.  Keep doing it!

Are you in a wheelchair?

1.  Do the roll!  Roll yourself forward squeezing your abs tight.  Release your abs and roll backwards!

2.  Wheelchair dips!  If your chair has secretary arms and you won’t fall out if you raise them up and out of the way - do mini-dips!

Lock your wheels.  Put your hands on top of the tires and push up.  Try not to let yourself drop like dead weight back down.  Push up and hold yourself there for a count of 3.  Build up your holding time.  Use the arms of your wheelchair to do the same thing.  It’s the more advanced level.

3.  Do the twist!  That was my favourite!  Works the abs really well!

This is just a smidgen of ways to keep yourself moving and obviously fidgeting isn’t going to knock weight off you and turn you into an incredible athlete,  but it’s not supposed to.  The idea is to keep active Keep moving.  Keep doing.  Use it or lose it.

PS: The wheelchair exercises are strengthening exercises and will help you burn more calories.

For the bored with Disabilities

Sometimes being disabled can be a total bore.  It’s seems to get worse when it’s around holiday seasons.  So, with Turkey Day being just around the corner I thought it might be nice to suggest ways (though I’m not responsible if you’re insane enough to try them) to keep yourself entertained at the dinner table.

1.  Stick a firecracker up the turkey’s butt.  Say it’s a candle and light it.  You’re actually doing your family a favour since no one really likes 300 meals of leftover turkey anyway.

2.  Smear cranberry sauce on yourself and scream that the turkey attacked you and does anyone have a band aid.

3.  Make yourself a beard out of the whipped cream. If anyone yells, say, “HO HO HO!!!!” and rub your tummy.

4.  If asked if you’d like dressing, say, “I never eat anything that comes out of somethings butt.”

5.  Lastly, if your family hasn’t had you hauled away in the twinkie mobile by now -  shove your hand down the hole where the turkey’s neck once was and scream that it’s eating you alive.

You’re guaranteed to have a wonderful time watching the expressions on everyone’s face.

This Turkey Day’s motto:  Dare to be a moron!

Today’s Quote: Sir Edmund Hillary

It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. –Sir Edmund Hillary

This is the perfect quote for this week.  On November 1, I joined nanowrimo, which is a yearly event where you spend November 1 - 30 writing a 50,000 word novel.  It’s a challenge.  Last year I dropped out.  Not only was my story becoming hideously boring, to the point I feared slipping into a coma, but my mind couldn’t hold the thought long enough.

This has been one of the most irritating parts of having a stroke.  I miss having a mind that thinks faster than the speed of a turnip.  Alas, for now and perhaps forever, I have to tolerate a mind that works at least 35 - 40% slower than normal.

I also miss being able to type 100 wpm with 98% accuracy.  At the moment, I’m whizzing along at a whopping 35 wpm. Let’s not even get into the accuracy.  LOL

Anyway, today is day 7 of the challenge.  I’m a little over 2000 words behind, but I have confidence that I’ll catch up today.

It may seem like an odd thing to those who never had a stroke, but this nanowrimo novel event is my Everest.  My goal is to stay focused for 30 days on writing one story and to write that story with 50,000 words.  Nanowrimo is a marathon that is and will push my little mind and determination to the limit, but I know I can finish this year.  Maybe I’ll be a little short of my 50,000 word novel and maybe I’ll surprise myself and go over it!  But the goal is to survive to the end, writing every day and giving it my best.

So, what is your Everest?  What are you doing to challenge yourself?  Whatever it is, give it all you’ve got.  Push yourself.  Get online and join a group that’s related to your challenge so you’ll have someone to encourage you along the way.  Don’t go it alone if you don’t have to.

Never surrender!  Never give up!

Make it a great weekend,
Yo

Quote of the Day: Anyone can give up…

Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.- unknown

Last week I received a happy birthday note from a friend who helped take care of me a few months after my last stroke, when I was at my worst.  The note couldn’t have come at a better time.

I’ve spent the past couple months in a ton of pain.  I hurt my back while working out, messed the muscles up and sent my sciatica into a frenzy.  I couldn’t bend for weeks.  My cats saw my weakness and took advantage of me.  I’m still in pain, but not as bad.

Then last week I fell and all 117 pounds of me landed on my right knee.  It’s a mess.  More pain.  More Tiger Balm.  More Tylenol.

All the pain meant little exercise.  Without exercise my mood and attitude go downhill.  Our bodies were meant to keep moving, not sit dormant at the desk or in a chair watching the boob tube.  In this case, with a heating pad, hot water bottle or icy hot patches.  I felt like the 2000 year old woman.  LOL

Pain is just bloody evil.  It’s not so bad for short periods of time, like when trying to eat broccoli without cheese, but when it’s never ending - it weakens both the body and the mind.  It’s hard to function after awhile.  That’s been me here lately. In short - I’ve been giving up little by little and not realising it.

Not even the chaotic state of my cottage gave me a clue.  Nor my poor eating habits of - tea and crackers, tea crackers and pb, tea and pb, tea pb and bread, etc.

Then I got the note.  My friend wrote:

“You are my heroine.  You put in maximum effort.  You are productive and keep yourself up and moving.”

I didn’t feel like I fit any of that when I was reading it, but I knew what she said was true.  I do put in maximum effort.  I am productive.  I do keep myself moving. I needed to be reminded.

There are some things you just can’t do on your own all the time.  Sometime you need someone to come along and remind you of who you are and wake you up to what you’re allowing yourself to become.  My friend gave me that extra boost I needed to pull myself up by the bootstraps and push on again.

So, here’s our challenge for this week.  Pick out one friend and either send them a note, email, or call them and tell them something that you admire about them and how it’s helped you when you needed it in your recovery.

Make it a great day!  Never surrender!  Never give up!

Quote for the day - by Art Berg

“The impossible just takes a little longer.” –Art Berg

The perfect quote for recovery.  To put with the doctor telling you that after 6 months you won’t see as much progress.  Laugh in his face or drool if it’s the best you can do.

Many people see bigger gains after the first 6 months.  A friend of mine had a massive stroke last year and has succeeded in breaking all the rules.  Her biggest stride was when?  After the first 6 months.  Mine was when?  After the first 6 months.

When was yours?  Has it happened yet?  If not, don’t give up…“the impossible just takes a little longer.”

So how do you keep your chin up while working toward your goal?  I mean, it’s hard when you’re not progressing as fast as you think you should and easy to get negative and depressed.

Here’s a trick you might want to try!  A friend of mine got me hooked on making a grateful journal.  It helped me a lot!  Still does.

Admittedly, there were days when it was difficult to think, much less understand the question, but she would ask me the 6 questions and she’d fill in the blanks, since she knew me well enough to know what I was probably going to say.  It got really funny at times.

So why does it help?  It helps because your emotions are your biggest enemy.  They can’t be trusted any more than a snake with a rat.  Our emotions make us think things are worse than they really are.

The grateful journal helps you look beyond your emotions (with a heck of a lot of effort sometimes) and look for the positive and good things going on around you.

So, here’s the game plan.  Grab a notebook or tape recorder.  If you’re not able to write and don’t have a tape recorder  have a friend ask the questions and record them for you.

Make sure they are recorded in some form or other.  Your journal will be a great inspiration to you down the road.

Here’s the questions:

1.  What surprised you today?
2.  What touched you “?
3.  What inspired you today?
4.  What are you grateful for today?
5.  What did you learn today?
6.  What are you proud of yourself for today?

Give it a shot and see how it helps improve your attitude, which in turn will help speed your recovery!

Never surrender!  Never give up!

Yo

Today’s quote by Thomas Edison

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

- Thomas Edison

Last weekend I was on the hill and surrounded by briers and thorns as long as 3″.  It was overwhelming for my little brain.

It takes very little to overwhelm you after a stroke, even if it’s been a long time since you had one.

The oddest and simplest thing can shut down the brain.  Sometimes it’s pain.  Sometimes it’s the frustration of not being able to make your body do what you want it to.  Sometimes it’s dealing with people around you and feeling alone because no one understands.

It’s very easy in those moments to let discouragement get the best of you.  Let’s face it.  It gets tiring having to fight everyday to overcome our new obstacles.  It’s easy to want to give up.

But!  What if I’d given up when I was overwhelmed in the thickets?  I’d been in big trouble.  I had to get out so I could get home.

Problem was, the thickets were thick, massive and painful and before I knew it - I was surrounded.  My focus was completely engrossed on my surroundings, so much so that I couldn’t think my way out.

I was so overwhelmed, I knew I wasn’t getting out without help.  Thankfully, I had Jeff my cat to help me.

jeff the cat Jeff’s really good at keeping an eye on me when I’m in the woods.  When I don’t show up when he thinks I should, he comes looking for me.

He has a particular call he makes that means I need to follow him.  He called for me and I followed.  Before long I was out of the mess and feeling very grateful to my little Jeff.

What I learned from that experience was this.  A goal can help you re-direct your thoughts when you’re about to become overwhelmed by a mess.  Rather than focusing on the mess, you simply turn your thought’s to your goal and the mess will weaken and work it’s way out.

Sometimes having a goal doesn’t help and you need someone else to help you refocus on your goal.  It can happen through hearing their voice, through a hug or a simple touch.

And as you’ve learned from the story, that someone doesn’t have to be human - a pet can do the same thing.  :]

Never surrender!  Never give up!

Yo

The road to recovery

After hearing an update last night on a friend who had a massive stroke a year ago, I decided to do another post on recovery.

So, I pulled out my white board and began mind mapping the idea of “recovery”. I placed the word “recovery” in the middle and circled it.  From there I drew branches reaching out from the center thought.

In a matter of minutes, I saw it all came down to two things: attitude and the willingness to learn.

Willingness to learn is the easy part, but attitude?  Crikey!  That’s a tough one, especially after a stroke when our brains have been fried in a skillet.  Our personalities have been warped.

Personally, I like who I was immediately after my stroke better than who I returned to later - which was my normal self. Immediately after my stroke I was nice.  Really sweet, even!  Nothing bothered me because there wasn’t a brain to be bothered.  It was nice and quite in my head.  No one was home.

Back to the subject at hand!  So this week that’s what we’re going to be looking at - how our attitude and willingness to learn determine how well and how fast we recover.  Plus!  Tips to succeed!

Check back tomorrow for our first go!

Quote for the day!

Outwardly one’s life may suffer every kind of limitation, from bodily paralysis to miserable surroundings, but inwardly it is free in meditation to
reach out to a sphere of light, beauty, truth, love, and power.

Do you know how…

If you’re left or right handed, do you know how a stroke might affect your ability to do certain things?

Do you know the different treatments that might be used if you have a bleeding stroke or a blockage?

How long will it take you to recover in rehab?

Is it possible to recover various functions if some of your brain cells dropped dead?

If you’ve ever asked any of these questions, then check out this article I came across this morning at The Brain Matters. It discusses all of the above in very simple terms.

Make it a great day! Never surrender! Never give up!

Hype of Hydrotherapy / Aquatic Physical Therapy

[Although stroke isn't mentioned in the article, it's still something to look into.]

Hype of Hydrotherapy / Aquatic Physical Therapy

By Milos Pesic

Doesn’t water suggest life? Since the dawn of time, water has possessed an overflow of revitalizing healing properties. Water cleanses, purifies, soothes.

In more medical terms it eliminates inflammation and infection. Helping healing better, and more cheaply, than many of our chemically advanced concoctions, the simple molecule does so much more it may be futile to ask why – just how.

In hydrotherapy or aquatic physical therapy, patients are gently immersed in warm water. This form of underwater therapy aims to assist patients to overcome conditions where movement is limited because of paralysis or pain, or where the patient’s muscles have been weakened due to injury or illness.

Water immersion allows patients to exercise painlessly, even pleasurably, aiding a hasty recovery from a wide variety of conditions.

Aquatic physical therapy has been used for decades as an integral part of treatment for severe arthritis or post knee or hip surgery. Fibromyalgia or rheumatic syndrome, a condition characterized by body aches, pain, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and anxiety, combined with tenderness and whose cause is unknown, is also healed by aquatic physical therapy.

Ankylosing Spondylitis, a form of arthritis where the spinal vertebrae become progressively inflamed and the spine eventually becomes fused, making movement very limited, also benefits from the hydro treatment.

Even in some serious neurological conditions, the aquatic physical therapy can increase mobility as well as the power in the muscles by allowing movement in muscles normally unable to move. Though it cannot help the illness, aquatic physical therapy can also help to re-instruct muscles to get over damage from stroke or accidents.

Regrettably, aquatic therapy still has its share of limitations. Pure water therapy cannot help patients who are incontinent for hygiene reasons, as well as those with skin conditions or allergies to chlorine. And it is unsuitable for people who have high blood pressure as hydrotherapy raises the blood pressure.

Nonetheless, hydro/aquatic physical therapy especially helps therapists help their patients because being immersed in warm water makes the buoyant movement much easier as the water lifts the limbs, improving joint movement and getting the joints working effectively again, in contrast to painful movement against gravity.

The qualified aqua therapist has three primary objectives in performing therapy in warm water for his patients: to abolish gravity, allowing the body to float and amplifying the power in the muscles, and providing greater movement of a specific limb or joint; to conduct gentle exercises because of its effective resistance to movement; and to relax the muscles and ease the pain with the water’s warmth and healing powers. And to look at it simply, hydrotherapy is just an underwater exercise…
